I must admit, I’ve never given much thought to Valentine’s Day – as an adult that is – it’s different when one is a child. We’ll bring this up again later. To start, let’s look at the options for this special day.
One of the best features of the Weekend Financial Times is the ever-popular “Lunch with the FT” where a crackerjack writer interviews a famous celebrity for one-to-two hours. Questions and answers are weaved into the lunch that often starts with: why this particular restaurant was chosen (by the interviewee), what appetizers or entrées to order, and finally, what midday drinks should be ordered (if at all).
I know very little about military life, but after reading an in-depth article about four young women at an air base in the middle of a desert on the Arabian Peninsula I was very impressed.
In the late summer and fall of 2018 a tsunami of publicity for the movie Crazy Rich Asians hit America. In August there was a write-up in the New York Post, New Yorker and the Weekend Financial Times (a big, bold headline on the front page – very unusual).
We’re entering a brand new year so I believe it’s time to tackle a subject I’ve been avoiding: Artificial Intelligence. Why have I been skirting around AI for so long? Full disclosure: No matter how much I read about it – I still don’t really grasp it.
“Oh God, I have to get rid of these extra pounds!”
This is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions – whether it’s five pounds or 50 many people say to themselves, “It’s a new year and I’m starting with a clean slate, so this is it.” Eating healthy (no potato chips) and bringing one’s weight down is #1 on this list.
I was looking for a timely topic for December’s festive holiday time when I came across a piece in the Life & Arts section of the Weekend Edition of the Financial Times (8/12/18) titled “Humanity’s Drinking Game” by Robin Dunbar.
Off and on I read things that totally blow my mind – this is one of them. On July 19, 2018 in the New York Post I read an article penned by Jane Ridley and Suzy Weiss that totally amazed me. In fact, I read it three times just to make sure I was really “getting it.”
Ralph Lauren is in the midst of celebrating his 50th anniversary. With any career that longevity is to be applauded, and in the fashion industry that can be quite fickle, that is especially quite an accomplishment. Although he is most likely known for his apparel offerings, whether it's for his namesake label, his Lauren by Ralph Lauren label or his Polo Ralph Lauren label, it is still safe to say his reach goes beyond "just" apparel.
Now that Thanksgiving has already come and gone, it's time to officially begin thinking about the gift-giving season. What are you going to get for the woman or the man on your list?
I think one of my New Year’s resolutions will be “no more blogs about shoes” because I’ve written so much about shoes in 2018 (this resolve will probably have a short shelf life and vanish by Valentine’s Day). Why? Because the topic is so multi-faceted: namely, the history of shoes, the designers who create them, retail shoe events, fascinating footwear exhibits and, of course dazzling new and innovative approaches to shoes that are always appearing.
I’m sure you’ve heard about Elon Musk, the billionaire, who is a co-founder of PayPal and Tesla Motors. He was in the news when he sent his “kid-sized” submarine to northern Thailand to help in the flooded cave rescue of 12 young footballers and their 25-year-old coach. Ultimately, the mini submarine wasn’t used, but it did give both the United States and Musk a lot of positive news coverage.
