Maye Musk Is Really Rockin’

Now, according to an article I read in Bazaar’s January 2020 edition, Musk is the oldest star ever to appear in a CoverGirl ad campaign. She looks 20 years younger than she is – in other words: absolutely terrific.  Her incredible life story is now being told in a book titled “A Woman Makes a Plan” with startling photos from the family vault.

WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?

Her story begins with an action-packed childhood. Born in Canada, she grew up mainly in South Africa, where her adventurous family searched for the fabled Lost City of the Kalahari in her father’s plane. My interest was peaked at once – I had heard of the Kalahari Desert, of course – but a Lost City was something else.

WHAT AND WHERE IS IT?

In the African countries of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa there is roughly 350,000 sq. mi. of sandy wilderness known as the Kalahari Desert where, according to historical lore, there exists an ancient, ruined lost city. Over the past 130 years, at least 30 expeditions have gone in search of this fabled mystery. So far, nothing has been found. 

FIRST: A BEAUTY PAGEANT WINNER

At 21-years-old, Musk started her career as a finalist in the 1969 Miss South Africa competition. Then she went on to study nutrition and later earned a Master’s degree in nutritional science from the University of Toronto. We’re definitely looking at beauty and brains here.

SECOND: MARRIAGE, DIVORCE AND THREE KIDS

She raised three precocious children and says, “People ask me all the time how I did it. I think what I did was leave them alone to develop their own passions and give them the freedom to explore their own ideas.” She relates that when she encouraged Elon, then 12, to submit a computer program he’d designed – to his favorite computer magazine – the publication not only printed it, but he received a check for $500. “I don’t think they knew he was 12,” she says with a laugh.

AT ONE TIME SHE WEIGHED OVER 200 LBS.

“I was South Africa’s only plus-size model!” she says. “As a nutritionist I would tell my clients how to eat and it changed their lives. It took a little while to change my own, but I did it.”

Musk (who has a twin sister) moved her family to Canada after her divorce and now all three (two boys and one girl) are grown, have children and live in the United States. Musk herself has never been happier.

HAVE YOU NOTICED? MODELS ARE NOW ALLOWED TO AGE

This is a current trend that’s very interesting. It used to be that models were out when they hit their thirties. Now we have Lauren Hutton, 77; Christy Turlington Burns, 51; Naomi Campbell, 51 and Cindy Crawford, 54 – all still appearing in print and whatever – AND ALL GORGEOUS!
